Review Makita 12 inch Sliding Miter Saw

I'm here in the Colfax high wood shop this is my sliding compound 12 inch miter saw and it's a double bevel so it goes both ways I've had this for quite a few years this is a Dewalt DW 708 I've been very happy with it it's where great student shave used it really well but there was a few problems that I've been having with it mostly the electrical and the brake so I was going to replace it.  I was going to replace it with the same 12 inch to saw however I ran into an old student of mine who's a finish carpenter and he said I should replace it with the Makitaso I ended up doing that I bought the Makita DXT this is a LS 12 19 L and we're going to set it up today and I'll give you a review on how much I like it and the better features this newer one has vs.  the old one. reading the directions good safety checkthe blade on, how's it for tabletop height compared to the fence?it's a little bit higher than that that's what you want you want it just a little bit Sarma Peeta you gotta go zero blood on the bottom a little bit super nice super nice ah we've made a few cuts on it so far seems really accurate checked them with the square a couple things I really like a lot about it over the other one is that it actually has almost a 17-inch cut capacity it has a deeper cut capacity the minors are greater you can actually go to sixty degrees this way and this way that's a gigantic add right there a couple of the features over here that I like a lot this is just like a toe it's running on the tracks here and if you want to lock it for travel that's a lock button right there don't want travel there's also a lot of button right here so you could lock it out pull it down and lock it I like that actually the safety feature as well so when you it'snot a noose you can lock it down and have the blade fully covered the dust collection on this is substantially better there's both rubber scoop down here and a pipe off the top and they come together and the t-junction right here I still need to add another pipe to our central vac but I think dust collection on is going to be much better I think I like the laser guard on it here's the laser it's on/off switch so there's a laser there's a fine adjustment on the laser so you can put on either side of the line the cutting itself is really nice watch how quickly it breaks I really like this a lot it sounds really quick I think there's actually less blade exposed so we've only used it really opened it up today and got it going today but so farre views are really big you know we mill our own oak slabs and those are really big hard cuts I do like the idea that is a 15 amp motor and it does have a direct drive so here's the motor it's actually shaft driven instead of the belt drive so I think it's going to work out really well so I'll keep you posted but my my review is I like it I like the versatility of it the larger cutting capacities and the increase in safety from the old one more features we've been using this for another day or two it's working out really well a couple things I want to go over one was it came from the factory these are my beautiful woodpeckers square here it came from the factory perfectly square and horizontal and you can see putting this on there is nice to see the laser guide as well and then it's also square and vertical it's actually nice couple other features on here is bevel before you change the bevel on here you want to remove the high fences there's how when it's in the back and the high fences come out to the bevel this is a lock on the bevel so you want to loosen this lock up right her eif I wanna do a left-hand bevel I pull this little plastic tab up and lock it in up so it stays up and then that'll bevel it left then it has detents yea hall right so there's D 10 to 22 and a half so it has multiple differentdetents where you can lock it and then wherever you so if you're doing a 22 and a half bevel and it's locked in there you still use this to get it really secure and then unlock this and then move it back and then the right-hand bevel is just detent is a push button here so you get a push in this and that's your right hand level with the same locking detents and then once you once it's locked in place lock it tighter there that's the bevel both left and right hand bubbles they're fixed stops in there and detent on good measurements another feature that's super cool it's back in this is really a cool future here so this is a fine stop here on your depth of cut if you want to use this for cutting dedos or rabbit sthe way you do that is you pull this tab over and then this is now stopping it so you can see right here I'm like I don't know a half inch up and then the adjustment on that is you know this will make it go deeper clockwise when they could go shallower okay this adjustment right here is your overall cut depth soI have this tab out to this stop stop on it but it's not going to go all the way back through the fence so I do need a spacer board I'm gonna take a space of ward place it here I should clamp this down my clam which I want to clamp this down and then now I'm still holding it I'm gonna cut cut there I can loosen this up a little bit go over make another cut and keep working it down so I'm able to cut NATO's with this sliding chop saw I could make really nice dedos using that flick stop on the top and the wall does data I just slide this back in all the way back down a lot of great futures I'm really liking this does the 15 inch crosscut look had a 8 inch crown on here the 8 inch is the longest route so all in all this has been a great review we've been using it for a few days now I just keep discovering more and more features on it the students use it pretty hard and just holding up well and it's holding true but then vertical bevel and true and the miter as well students are using it we've got a couple days with it working great discovering more and more cool features I really like that dado robin ability with it and the double lock on the bevels that's going to come in a handy.

Dado or Trench Cuts using a Miter Saw

That is when you cut notches out of two pieces of wood and you can clamp them together like that. Ideally you'd have a router to do this, but I don't have a router, so. . . I just got this miter saw a couple of weeks ago, and a guy on my Facebook page named Chris. One of the 9% of my Facebook followers who are actually men. He suggested a video by a guy named Justin Pre witt on how to use a miter saw to do dado cuts. Here's two that I did last night.  They're a little bit messy on the inside as you can see but they lock perfectly.  An the fact that they're messy doesn't really matter because you're not even gonna see it. The big issue for me with these cuts is that's far as I can tell, with this particular miter saw, there's no way to lock it.  See right here? This little dot this is what keeps it. . . That's the stopper right there.  I needed to figure out something that was gonna stop it right there so that I could cut just enough through the piece of wood without cutting all the way through it. After a lot of experimentation - this was my test piece - I managed to find this one bolt which is just the right height so that it won't go all the way through. Unfortunately the consequence of having raised that stop up means that the saw blade no longer has enough opportunity to get all the way through the wood at an equal depth all the way through.  And let me show you what I'm talking about on that. See? It's not evenly cut all the way through. So I had to do to fix that was create a false fence using a couple of two by fours. Little pieces.  I don't actually have the ability to move this fence forward so I kind of had to improvise. Now it has cut all the way through evenly on both sides. As you can see, it's not even, but I got something for that too. In Justin's video, he used something kind of like this.  I actually found that a little putty knife actually worked a little bit better for me.  Just matter of preference I suppose. Last night I also busted out my jig saw Once you get both pieces cut properly and you get them filed down a little bit and get all the extra spots taken out.  They fit together real nicely like that. Alright, y'all ready for this?I LOVE these legs.  The first one of these I ever made was for my husband as a Father's Day present, and I just took some little two by twos and cut them short and made legs out of them.  And this has way more style.  This looks way better.  I'm SO excited about it, so thank you Chris and thank you Justin for hooking me up with this idea.  I'm gonna be making all kinds of stuff. How to use a sliding mitre saw safely

Mitre saws are incredibly useful machines.  They've come down tremendously in price over the last few years.  20 years ago they used to cost an absolute fortune. You could get cheaper ones but they weren't very good.  Now you can get some that aren't expensive that are absolutely fantastic and do a brilliant job of cutting wood or metal.  They do come in a few different shapes and sizes.  The two that you can see behind me here, that one is a 10-inch that will cut wood, metal and plastic all with the same blade.  You can even put a diamond blade on that and cut masonry.  The one at the back there is a 12 inch that will cut timber or aluminium with a special blade.  So we will look at some of the features of the machines a bit later on.  I'm not going to go into great detail on the machines , but we're going to look at some of the safety aspects of using a miter saw.  There are some people on that use best miter saws and quite frankly they don't have a clue what they're doing.  They're showing you dangerous ways of using them so hopefully this video will help you to make sure that you use it the correct way.  To start off with we're going to look at some personal protective equipment or PPE.  The very minimum PPE that you should be wearing when you'reusing a miter saw is a pair of safety glasses and also some form of hearing protection. These machines are very noisy in use and if you keep using them over along period of time you will end up with hearing damage which nobody wants. There are a couple of ways you can protect your ears you can get pair of earmuffs like that which will offer absolutely brilliant protection or you can use earplugs. I have to admit that I normally have a pair of earplugs in my pocket everywhere I go but if I'm actually cutting metal I do tend to use the ear defenders because they give you better protection.  So for all it's very simple a pair of safety glasses and ear defenders that is the very minimum you should be looking at. If you're cutting wood you should be able to hook the machine up to a vacuum cleaner or a dust extraction unit that will take away the majority of the dust. If not or if you are cutting MDF you definitely needa dust mask, a very good quality dust mask.  The dust particles off that are particularly nasty.  If I am using one of these machines to cut metal or I am cutting masonry on it then the PPE goes a step further. I tend to put the safety glasses on I'll probably also wear a dust mask, I'll put the ear defenders on and also a full face visor.  If you're wondering why I wear a full face visor it's because if I go on site and have to use an angle grinder we have to wear one of these anyway so it's good practice to wear one of these if you are cutting metal or masonry using a mitre saw.  It really does give you full face protection.  Also if I was to cut something that is dusty using this saw I would also put a dust mask on.  So that's the PPE covered we are now going to take a closer look at some of these machines.  If you're using you rmitre saw a lot it is a lot better if you have an actual stand for it. The one I'm pointing out now is the Evolution stand that is a very cheap stand but the quality on it is absolutely fantastic for the money. It's very useful and you can fit virtually any mitre saw on that stand.  Over at the back there we have the Dewalt leg stand.  That is a lotbigger and it's also quite a bit more expensive but again it is a very, verygood quality piece of equipment.  It's always easier using a saw when it's on astand because you have something there to support long pieces of material etc. Before checking the blade for being square or before making any adjustmentsto the blade whatsoever it's absolutely critical that you ensure the machine isunplugged.  One of the first things you want to do before you use your saw evenif it's been stored for a long time they can get banged about and it can adjust them slightly, is to check that the blade is square to the table.  So to do that you'regoing to need a square.  Simply slide that on there, then touch it ontothe blade and that should be completely square. There should be no gap in betweenthere.  If you get a gap you need to adjust your blade.  You also need to checkit this way from the fence at the back to the blade again to ensure that thatis square.  If it's not square in either of those two planes,you're not going to get a straight cut and your mitres will be an absolute mile out. On a lot of mitre saws you will get a port where you canhook it up to an extraction unit.  It's always a good idea doing that, that willtake away the majority of the sawdust when you are cutting.  We're going tostart off by doing a simple cross cut on this piece off 8x2 timber.  So I'mgoing to put it on the machine, ensure it's up against the fence at the back there. Get it exactly where I want it,and then I'm going to clamp that down in position.  That is now firmly fixed to themachine.  There's no danger of that moving anywhere.  So this particular machine is asliding mitre saw these are incredibly useful, but you have to use them correctly. So it's important when you are doing thecut on this machine that you always pull it out as far as it will gobefore starting the cut.  Then you need to get the machine going up to fullspeed before you plunge downwards and then push the machine back.  What you don't want to do is get the machine started and slam it down into pieceworker that will damage the blade and then you'll end up buying a new blade. Also you don't want to set the machine touching the piece of timber before ithas reached full speed because that can also be dangerous, that can also damagethe blade.  So every time you pull it out as far as you can do, get the machine going to full speed, before gently touching the piece of material.  Once you've gone through the material you then push it back into the machine. I have seen some people that have started cutting there, they've gone through the piece of timber and then pulled it back that way, which is very dangerous.  That can give you a kickback.  It's a bit like using a circular saw backwards when you do that, you should never start your cut there and end it back there.  You always start out there and end your cut back there.  So that is the most basic thing and that isvery important when you're using a saw like this.  I've now put some earplugs in, I'm now going to put some safety glasses on, I'm going to switch the vacuum on and then I'm going to make this cut. You will notice when I made that cut that I left the blade in the material until the blade stopped turning.  That is the safest way of using a mitre saw. Although a lot of people quite simply let the blade go up like that because itis still covered by the blade guard when the blade is in the up position.  But ifyou want to be 100% safe you are better off leaving it down in theworkpiece until the blade stops.  So that is a crosscut you can see that that has given us a very clean cut.  I'm now going to do a mitre cut so we need to undothe knob at the front there and then we just need to turn that to whicheverangle we want.  We are going to cut this at about 30 degrees.  So again I'm going to put that in position, I'm going to use a clamp again to hold that down. You do have to be careful when you're doing mitre cuts and bevel cuts because of the position that the blade travels in.  It's not going straight back and forwards anymore so you do have to be extremely careful where you put yourhands when you're doing this.  You are much better off using the supplied clamps if you can do. So that is a mitre cut sometimes you need to mitre a piece of wood which isa bit too big for the machine.  You can't actually stand this up on there to cutit because it's to deep to be cut.  You've no chance of cutting that on there. So that is where the bevel cut comes in so you can simply line the wooddown flat like so.  It's not a good idea to clamp it, you can't always get the clamp in the position where you want it so it can be very difficult clamping the workpiece.  For this demonstration I'm going to clamp this side of the wood. So I'm going to drop that down there, just tighten that up.  I'm now going to ensure that the fence at the back there is out of the way, because this machine will very easily cut through that.  Then just going to undo this lever at the back and I'm just going to tilt the machine over until it gets to 45 degrees.  That's now locked in at 45 degrees.  I can now tighten up the handle at the back there. So that is a bevel cut.  You can also do a combination of a bevel cut and amitre cut at the same time which is known as a compound mitre.  So I'm now going to undo that, I'll just move that around there and that is a compound mitre.  So that has demonstrated the four basic typesof cuts that you can make on a sliding mitre saw.  Any sliding mitre saw will have a maximum amount of timber that it can cross cut but you can often double that if you do a plunge cut and then turn the material over. So it is possible if you have a saw that can cut for example 300 millimeters itis possible to cut a piece of material that is 600 millimeters wide.  Aluminium can be very difficult to cut unless you have a machine like this. This machine absolutely eats aluminium just with the regular blade on that comes with the machine.  The problem is with aluminium is that it actuallysticks to the blade and it can actually start to clog up on the teeth.  So if you do get that problem it's very, very easy to fix. If you are cutting aluminium and the blade starts to clog simply cut a piece of steel using the blade and that will clean off any of the aluminium that has stuck to the teeth on the blade.  I have to point out that not all machines can cut aluminium and steel it's only the Evolution machines that can cut aluminium, steel and wood with the same blade.  You can also cut a groove or atrench in a lot of material by using the grooving stop.  Sometimes called a trenching stop.  That actually limits the depth for which the blade can go toon the machine.  That enables you to cut grooves or trenches in the material. So if you wanted to cut a groove in a piece of timber you can do it very easily using a sliding saw like this but one thing you have to do is you actually have to pack the material forwards like so.  So you have to pack the material away from the fence in the back there because the blade cuts on a radius. If you try to trench that piece of timber you're simply going to cut the shape of the blade in that piece of timber because you're cutting on a radius.  Soyou would have to put a block behind it and then as you cut that piece of timber you've cut a perfectly straight cut all the way through it because you're using the bottom of the blade.  So trenching or grooving is an extremely useful featurethat you can do on most sliding mitre saws.

I will start by un doing this knob, we can then press that lever underneath and that then enables you to turn the machine to 50 degrees in either direction. The machine also has positive locks at all of the important angles such as15 degrees 22. 5, 30 and 45 degrees.  On this side of the machine we have the work clamp that can be moved to either side of the machine depending on what you are cutting and we also have a hex key which has two sizes on it which makes it very useful, you should only need that one hex key to do anything on the machine.  We've also got a depth stop that is very useful if you are trenching and the beauty of the depth stop is you can actually set it to cutter depth and then if you don't want to use it you can simply flip that up out of the way enabling you to do a full depth of cut.  At the back there we have the fence and that has got the scale on one side.  This saw only tilts over to the left so if you were doing a cut like that you would have to remove that fence out of the way like so.  You can also replace the bushes on this machine very easily as you can with all Evolution machines.  We have then got a spindle lock button that is the guard release lever and then the switch to switch it on and off ison the inside of the handle and at the side there we've got the switch for the laser.  We then have the lock down pin which will prevent the head from lifting up.  We've then got the vacuum port and we've got the knob there to lock the sliding mechanism for when you are transporting it.  If you need to bevel the machine you simply undo that you can bevel the machine over to the desired angle and then you can tighten it in the correct position.  This saw actually has a soft start feature so when you squeeze the handle it actually starts very slowly,It also has an electronic brake so the blade actually stops very quickly. I'm now going to put on some hearing protection and some safety glasses and then I'm going to cut a few test pieces for you to look at. I will actually reduce the volume when I come to edit the video. These are some of the pieces that I have just cut, obviously I can't actually talk-when I've got the saw running because I also have the vacuum cleaner running and it is very noisy.  But that is the architrave that I've cut at 45 degrees, you can see that that is absolutely perfect. And this is the bevel cut that that I did on the 8 inch skirting board. I'm now going to change the blade on this I'm going to put a diamond disc onto cut some masonry.
